Sheffield’s Handsworth Historical Society holds monthly meetings at the Old Rectory and parish centre located at the back of St Mary’s Church. The chairman is Sandra Gillott who has also written many books about the area.
The Society also runs a small museum which is open to the public once a month in the afternoon. The opening dates for 2016 are as follows: Jan 11th; Feb 8th March 14th; April11th; May 16th; June 13th; July 11th; Aug 8th; Sept. 12th; Oct 10th; Nov. 14th; Dec 12th. The museum has a huge amount of information (maps, publications and photos) about old Handsworth both before it became part of Sheffield in the 1920s and since showing the great changes that have been seen in the area. It also includes displays of artefacts from the industrial and farming past as well as domestic and household objects which will be familiar to many.
